Picture this, you have just moved out of your parent’s house, and you are now living alone for the first time ever. As a student, you are facing new responsibilities and learning new things about yourself and your community every day. Navigating a new world can be frightening, here are some tips to help protect yourself from the dangers of the world.
1. Campus Security
Parkland security serves the campus 24/7. As stated on Parklands website, “We seek to ensure a safe and secure campus environment for the more than 10,000 students, faculty, staff, and visitors”. Parkland College also provides services that allow students to request an escort if they feel uncomfortable in their environment. Contact Campus Security if you feel the safety of you or another individual is threatened.
2. Be Alert
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially when walking alone. When walking at night try to stay in well-lit areas that are populated. Whether you are in an atmosphere you are not familiar with or on campus, be cautious.
3. Have a Plan
Always have a plan of escape. Whether the plan involves exiting your living area safely or knowing how to defend yourself in a threatening situation. It is always good to be prepared!
4. Report Suspicious Activity
Calling Campus Security and reporting suspicious activity can help protect you and other people as well.
5. Trust Your Instincts
Officer Penland recommends not to dismiss your suspicious feelings. Go with your gut!
6. Educate Yourself
Be aware of the security and safety services available to you in your area. You can contact Parklands Public Safety department by phone at 217/351-2369 or by email at publicsafety@parkland.edu.
7. Check Entrances
Southeastern Oklahoma State University recommends that students make sure apartment doors and windows are locked, especially if they live on the first floor.
Listed are a few useful tools to enhance your safety:
- Peep Holes
- Remote Locks
- Chain Locks
- Ring Doorbells
8. Lock your car and keep belongings out of sight
According to Howard University’s Department of Public Safety, you should park in well-lit areas that are well populated and in sight. Lock your car as soon as you enter and exit your vehicle. Keep your keys in hand when walking towards your car for quick access. (Safety Tips)
9. Be aware of your online presence
Be mindful of what personal information you share online. Sharing information like your location with the public can endanger your safety.
10. Keep loved ones updated
Share your location with family members. As well as keep them updated on what you are doing throughout the day.
These tips are useful ways to help ensure your safety when living in a new and unfamiliar place. With the recent news about college students being unsafe in their college homes, these tips are good to keep in the back of your mind.
