December 1st marked the debut of Parkland Theater’s A Christmas Story, a comedic but sentimental retelling of a familiar story that accentuates the most perfect imperfect Christmas.
The show boasts a fabulous vintage set including the classic Parker household, Higsby’s slide, Ralphie’s classroom, and Christmas tree farm. Center stage: Adult Ralph who finds himself in a state of reminisce and thus, narrates a past Christmas of dilemmas. The show hit every major predicament of the classic 1983 film including triple dog dares, fighting smoking furnaces (and the neighbor’s dogs), facing a fierce Indiana winter, bullies (specifically Scut Farkas), and of course… the journey of securing the Red Ryder BB gun.
The constant drama, memorable scenes, and the dreaded mantra of the show, “you’ll shoot your eye out”, excelled in humoring and entertaining the audience. The comedic mood was ever present, while also delivering a softhearted, nostalgic undertone that undoubtedly resonated with each show-goer.
“It was a great Christmas because we had love. We had each other” – Adult Ralph (Douglas Malcolm)
Though the cast featured many young actors, such as lead Ralphie played by sixth-grader Aidan Larkin, each member gave a phenomenal performance and brought a joyful, childish spirit to the stage. Credit to the fantastic production is also due to director Chelsea Collier and the crew!
Parkland Theater’s A Christmas Story is certainly an experience for the whole family and inclusive of all ages. Coupled with a hot chocolate bar and other refreshments served at intermission, the show was a perfect way to kick off the Christmas season! Upcoming performances will be held in the Harold and Jean Miner Theater at 7:30pm on December 9, 10. A 3pm performance will take place on December 11. Tickets can be bought prior to the show online here (https://parkland.universitytickets.com/) or at the ticket booth upon arrival given the show is not sold out.
