Going to college can be a stressful experience and returning as an adult who’s passed the “normal” student age range is even more nerve-racking. That’s why Parkland has an Adult Re-entry Club where older returning students can meet and help each other succeed. The Parkland College Adult Re-entry Services Facebook page promises “fun, support, study buddies, [and] food.”
Club president Katelyn Badger said of the recently formed group that “what I really wanted was just a place for fellow adult students to come, unwind, and just talk… I know a few of our members wanted just to be with other adults who needed a sense of togetherness, especially when having to be in classrooms with younger adults… We all need help and having someone there is the best help you can get.”
One of the club’s greatest challenges has been finding a consistent time for everyone to meet, with conflicting work schedules and family obligations, various schedules have been tried out. Despite this difficulty Badger said that the members “try to meet once a month or more” in room U229. The club has still been able to coordinate some activities, including a Thanksgiving fundraiser to buy meal boxes for local families and a holiday party at Jupiter’s.
The club will soon be entering a transition phase, with both Badger and vice president Melinda McColgan graduating in May. Badger remains optimistic about its importance. “I just want people to know that we are a fun group. We can help any way we can.” Badger said.
