Now that it’s March, it’s time to recognize a variety of powerful or groundbreaking women. Whether that be women characters in the books that I’m going to recommend, or the women that wrote them.
Naked In Death by J.D Robb
This murder mystery is the first in a long series of books with death in the name and was written by a woman whose name is widely known throughout the romance genre.
The name she writes this series under is a pseudonym she created in order to be able to release more of her work
The woman? Nora Roberts.
The “In Death” series features New York Police and Security Department lieutenant Eve Dallas. Through this series, Roberts is able to explore a powerful female lead in the year 2058. And while it largely focuses on suspense and crime, it wouldn’t be a Nora Roberts’ story if there weren’t any romance.
If you’re looking for a series that’ll keep you on your toes, “In Death” has 63 books in the series, and Roberts’ has no plans on slowing down any time soon.
American Royals by Katharine McGee
This Young Adult novel by Katharine McGee features the lives of four young women whose lives are all intertwined due to one thing, the crown.
In this reimagined American political climate, George Washington became the first King of the United States instead of the first president.
Now, several monarchs later, the rule mandating the first born male will be king is changed to the first born.
Beatrice Washington is the first in line after the change, and the story follows her, her sister Samantha, her sister’s childhood best friend Nina, and Daphne, the girl desperate to be in the royal family.
Daughters of Sparta by Claire Heywood
Once again, daughters of royalty – sisters Klytemnestra and Helen have their stories retold in this novel following their lives before and through the end of the Trojan War.
In many depictions of these characters, they are often shown to be selfish women who only care about themselves. Helen is made out to be stupid and lazy, while Klytemnestra is written as a cheater who betrays her husband by killing him.
This version of the story sheds a different light on the sisters and shows there might be more to them than what the legend told.
Helen is a woman manipulated by a man into believing he truly loves her and can save her from an unhappy marriage.
And Klytemnestra is a mother whose sole purpose is to protect her kids.
Emily Dickinson Poems
While this isn’t any particular book, Emily Dickinson is a renowned poet who wrote many poems throughout her life but only had her work published and appreciated once she had died.
As an unmarried woman in the 1800’s, Dickinson constantly challenged the patriarchy and showed as much in her poems.
Being a woman who was ahead of her time, Dickinson’s poems are a good place to start to celebrate women this month.
