CluedUpp Games has become widely known for their geogaming scavenger hunts that promote spending time outside.
On Saturday, September 9th, Champaign held its first ever outdoor, immersive, “geogaming” scavenger hunt hosted by CluedUpp Games.
Each hunt has a theme and story that makes it fun for participants of all ages. CluedUpp also encourages players to dress up in theme for the chance to win prizes. But also just to make the experience much more enjoyable.
One of the four hunts CluedUpp offers right now are “Beauty and the Beast”, “Witchcraft and Wizardry”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and “The Smurfs Great Escape”.
Multiple cities across the country feature each hunt. Eighty-plus countries also participant and host CluedUpp events.
Each CluedUpp hunt requires a ticket purchase. One ticket allows for six players and kids play for free.
CluedUpp sends out an email to the team leaders of each group just days before the hunt. The email contains the starting point for the hunt as well as additional information players may need for the hunt.
Twenty-four hours before the event team leaders will use their QR code to assemble their teams via the CluedUpp app. Players are then free to start at any time within the hours of the event.
The Hunt Begins
Champaign’s hunt on September 9th began within 200 meters of West Side Park.
After players start a map with clues will appear on the screen.
Each clue requires players to walk to its destination before they can access it. Once they arrive at the clue they will meet a new character.
The characters themselves have clues, objects, or information that help the players advance in the hunt.
Some of the classic fairytale characters players could find in the hunt were Jack Giant-Slayer and Fairy Godmother.
Some of these characters also include the ability to take a picture with them for those who have phones compatible with AR technology.
During the game players will have to work as a team to solve puzzles. The more puzzles solved the more information the characters will give to help you reach your objective.
In this hunt players race against the clock (and other players) in order to rescue the Beast and find out the culprit behind his sudden outburst.
Saving the Beast
You’ve automatically won the game if you save the Beast but CluedUpp does keep score of all the teams’ times. At the end of the game you can access the leaderboard and see where your team placed amongst the other groups.
You can also check your own team’s stats to find out information such as time penalties, quests completed, and characters found.
At the end of the game all the players on a team received an email from CluedUpp with three certificate options they can download and print out.
In addition to that CluedUpp holds mini competitions for the teams. The categories and their winners are the following:
Fastest Team – The Bloomington Beauties
Best Dressed Team – Lesk
Best Team Picture – G Unit
Best Team Name – The Taco Belles
Best Mini Player – Poor Belle
Pawesome Pup – Beauties and Beasts
