Gopher Mafia Games has long been a staple at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana for everything traditional tabletop – whether it be merchandise, open play sessions, or special events. Chris Olson, a third-year student here majoring in Communication Studies who focuses on marketing and entrepreneurship, hopes to continue that legacy when he purchases the store. He says while the name and core concept will not be altered, he plans on making one major change: finding a better location. Within the first year, he also wants to adapt business hours and foster a stronger sense of community.
Olson has always had an interest in gaming, but as he grew older, he began to appreciate how “… mentally engaging and socially rewarding tabletop can be.” Openness, inclusivity, the opportunity to connect with people – these are all aspects of the Gopher Olson treasures.
Aside from his former career in the military, Olson has professional experience in the industry, too. As both a customer and employee at Gopher Mafia Games, he has developed a keen sense of what makes the Gopher so special. Going above and beyond, he hopes to give back to patrons “… more than just sell them products.” This is a business model Olson is dedicated to creating and maintaining. He wants the Gopher to thrive of course, but he also wants people to feel comfortable hanging out there – even if it’s just for the atmosphere.
While he has not planned a grand re-opening, there may be something celebratory on the horizon after they complete their “big move” on January 26th through 28th. Olson says soon they’ll be increasing weekend events starting in January “… for gamers and hobbyists to meet new friends while participating in their favorite games.”
