Attending college can be a rather daunting endeavor at times, but the one thing college should never be is boring. Here at Parkland College, there is always something happening, such as a campus activity, a club meeting, or a campus event. You just have to know the right place to look.
One popular organization on campus that has seen exceptional success so far is the Parkland Academy Team and the Comadre/Copadre Program. This organization works in conjunction with Club Latino and is spearheaded by Moises Orozco and Eduardo Coronel.
“The purpose of the organization is twofold,” Orozco explained. “It was created to insure incoming Latino/Latina students are academically successful and to also increase Latino/Latina enrollment by establishing a strong connection with the community.”
New students are paired with successful returning students as a mentor program. The organization is always coming up with fun and creative ways to get students involved. Theyrecently had an ice cream social that yielded a large turnout.
Their next upcoming event is Wednesday, Sept. 17, Where they are screening the new film
“Cesar Chavez: History is Made One Step at a Time” in room U140 from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Popcorn and snacks will be provided.

It’s that time of year again; the dreaded flu season. The Health and Wellness Center is hosting a Flu Clinic to help combat the illness. The clinic will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 2 p.m-6 p.m.
“It’s an extremely good deal, only $18 for a flu shot,” Wellness Coordinator June Burch said.
Due to the influx of people attending the clinic, Burch recommended registering with her in room U112 ahead of time. You may also contact June Burch at 217-373-3879, or at jburch@parkland.edu.
Many students have aspirations to transfer to a university or private school after their journey here at Parkland College. If any student finds that they are overwhelmed by this prospect or unsure of where they may want to go, the Transfer Fair is a great place to start.
The Transfer Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. The Transfer Fair is being put on by Office Assistant to the Director Julie Shumate Meece and Counselor Jennifer Klatsky from the Counseling and Advising Center.
“Representatives from 40-50 different private and state schools will be in attendance,” Meece stated.
The fair will be held in the College Center in the Flag and South Lounges. Don’t worry if you are unable to attend. You can access the Counseling and Advising website via www.parkland.edu and set up a personal meeting with various representatives.

Although the Student Union has been open and occupied for several months, there hasn’t been an official christening until now. On Wednesday, Sept. 17, there will be an official Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Open House held at 4 p.m.
During the event will be self-guided tours and food provided. In coordination with the Health and Wellness Center there will be four alumni massage therapists available to give massages.
“Our goal is to celebrate the opportunity to have all student services in one building. Come out to meet the community and fellow students,” Chaya Sandler, Activity Programs Director said.
The Meet the President event on Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 12 p.m.-1 p.m., is a great way to get introduced to Parkland College President, Dr. Tom Ramage. The event will be held in the Student Union in the lounge between the Bookstore and the Cafeteria.
