Sometimes no matter how much we prepare and study at the beginning of the semester, by the time midterms have come and passed there’s one solution to getting that last .01% to push your grade where you need it to be. An all-night study session certainly isn’t advised by the experts but that doesn’t stop many students. In an attempt to fit those needs this finals season, the Learning Commons will be offering a variety of options for students studying late into the night.
Learning Commons Coordinator April Fewls explains that; “Due to staffing shortages the Learning Commons will still close at its normal time of 7:00 pm the Friday before Final Exams, but students that sign up will be able to participate and an ‘Academic Lock-in Extravaganza.’
Students that sign up and arrive by 6:59 pm Friday evening will be fitted with a shock collar before being treated to a buffet of coffee, energy drinks and sugary snacks.
“The collar interfaces with the student’s computer login and detects if students are scrolling through Facebook, Reddit or other nonproductive sites and administer a small as a reminder to get back on task.” Fewls continued. “It also will monitor students emotional levels and administer a similar shock if it reads that the student is going through an extended crying session after realizing that their word document did not save.”
For students that can’t quite burn the midnight oil, capsule hotel rooms will be available in the 3rd floor ‘Quiet Zone’. Each is just big enough to contain a student and backpack and will darken for 45 minutes before blaring ska music at full blast to ensure that no one sleeps to long.
To sign up for the lock in, visit the Learning Commons Information desk starting April 1st.
