Nicoline Hansen is an international student from Denmark and member of the Prospectus News team. Hansen serves as the digital editor, and primarily works on the Prospectus website and social media.
She grew up in a city called Elsinore, which is mostly known for Kronborg Castle, a famous castle featured in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Elsinore is a gorgeous city with a lot of old and colorful houses. It sits right by the sea and you can even look over to Sweden. Hansen is currently living in Champaign on campus, which is very different from where she grew up. Living here in the U.S. has always been a dream of hers.
This is Hansen‘s second semester working for the Prospectus. Other than the Prospectus, Hansen is involved with Applied Media Promotions, or AMP, at Parkland as well as the Student Leadership Academy. She gets to work with non-profit organizations and help them market themselves better to the community. Hansen was also just sworn in at the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society induction and she is really excited to get more involved in that organization. Additionally, she also works in the Accessibility Services Office three days a week.
Hansen is taking General Arts courses here at Parkland College until she can transfer in the fall of 2020. Hansen will then pursue her bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois in Advertising. She hopes one day to become an advertising consultant. Hansen has enjoyed taking different Parkland classes for many different reasons. Some of her favorite classes are BUS 101 and COM 121 because those were related to what she wants to do for a career. She also found herself really enjoying SOC 101 as she had always been very fascinated with people and different cultures.
“I really encourage people to get involved and to make the most out of their time here at Parkland”
Hansen has dedicated a lot of her time to Parkland and has gained so much from doing so. She has had amazing opportunities and has met so many great people along the way. At first it was really difficult for her to open up and to put herself out there.
“I am generally a pretty shy person. However, I am so glad that I got involved around campus. I really encourage people to get involved and to make the most out of their time here at Parkland. Parkland has so many great things to offer!”
Outside of school she developed strong love for horseback riding. She has been horseback riding for over 11 years and riding on a competitive level for a few years before moving to the United States. Hansen has been on a break for a little while now, but she is trying to get back into horseback riding. Hansen also loves to travel; she hopes to be able to travel a lot once she is done with school.
“I was really lucky to be able to travel a lot with my family growing up, so it is a big part of me. I also enjoy hanging out with friends whether that be having movie marathons, shopping, or grabbing a cup of coffee,” she said. “I really want to try living in a bigger city like Chicago at some point in my life. I would also love to move back home to Denmark for a little while at some point. I have never been to Asia before so that would be super cool and different to experience as well!” Hansen told the Prospectus.
Hansen wanted to leave students with one final piece of advice, “I think it is important to stay open-minded so that life can take you wherever it feels like.”
