With over 20 student clubs and organizations, Parkland is known for its above-average student
resources. These organizations, clubs, and resources are in place to make Parkland as inclusive,
impactful, and productive as possible. Student Life is the center for these clubs and
organizations, with their mission being to “[facilitate] the social, cultural, emotional,
interpersonal, civic, and ethical development of Parkland students through holistic student
engagement.”
Student Life to Young
Young added to that by saying that Student Life is “probably going to feel differently” due to his
philosophy change. Young said he will focus on “really empowering students to take the lead in
their organizations and build[ing] their community.”
Young went on to emphasize the value of having an environment that is constantly “looking to
see what we have done and where the future is at.”
A core value of Young’s is “spending good quality time with the people I care about after work
[…] and feeling like I can be there for that.” He added that “having a career and a life that
compliments each other so that I can be present” falls into that same core value of his.
However, when asked why he decided to pursue this job opening, Young referred back to a
former advisor of his.
He said, “I had a really great advisor help me understand that a value point was serving others.
She really sparked my interest. I thought this (the job opening) would be a great opportunity to
lead an office, supporting the students, creating a great community, making sure that students
feel like this is their home and are engaging here at Parkland College.”
And considering the two other core values he expressed, Young seems eager to make an impact
at Parkland.
“Another core value of mine is serving others. I have always been attracted to that. But for the
people that I work closely with, whether that be personally or professionally, I want to see other
people be successful. Having meaningful relationships with the people I care about.”
Young’s Hobbies
As far as hobbies go, Young has many, some of which may come as a surprise. He first explained
that he likes to run “at least” three miles a day and is also into motorcycles.
He said, “I own two motorcycles; when it’s nice weather, you will see me coming into or leaving
work on my motorcycle.” He then added, “A new hobby that I have been building upon is
smoking meats. I like cooking in general.”
As if that wasn’t enough, Young added that he is into “the punk-rock realm of things”
music-wise. He followed by saying, “More recently, it’s been more indie artists like Phoebe
Bridges to Wednesday and Snail Mail to Soccer Mommy.”
