BRANDON, Miss. – The No. 17 ranked Parkland College Softball team picked up two more non-conference wins at Hinds Community College on Thursday, February 23rd, as the Cobras (7-1) took down the Lady Eagles (2-4) in a 4-0 shutout in game one, and a 2-1 thriller in game two. Freshmen pitcher Ellie Vetter earned the first win of her career while going 3-3 at the plate in the first game before driving home the winning run in the second game.
Game 1: No. 17 Parkland College 4, Hinds Community College 0
Parkland took the lead in the top of the 4th on a two-run Karley Yergler home run, and Jaidi Davis (2-4, 2 RBI, R, 2B, SB) gave her team a 3-0 lead in the 5th inning, driving in Lizzie Stiverson (1-4, 2 R) on a ground out. Davis hit an RBI single in the top of the 7th, and Yergler (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER) picked up her first save of the season in the 4-0 win.
Ellie Vetter (5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 8K) got the win, striking out eight batters in five innings of work, and freshman Katy Hendricks (2-3) singled twice in game one.
Game 2: No. 17 Parkland College 2, Hinds Community College 1
The Cobras struck first, as Lizzie Stiverson (2-4, R, 2 2B, SB) scored on a passed ball in the top of the 1st inning, but the Eagles evened the score on an RBI triple in the bottom of the 5th. Ellie Vetter (1-4, RBI) was the hero on Thursday night, popping an RBI single into center field to score freshman Maddie Reed and giving Parkland a 2-1 lead in the top of the 7th. Mahomet-native Karley Yergler (2.2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 6 K) earned the win, striking out two in the bottom of the inning to finish the sweep.
Up next, the Cobras will compete in the Hinds JUCO Classic in Vicksburg, Mississippi this weekend. Parkland faces Southwest Mississippi Community College and No. 8 Northwest Mississippi Community College tomorrow, Friday, February 24th, in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
