CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 4 ranked Parkland College Softball team welcomed conference rival Illinois Central College to Champaign for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 29th, and the Cobras won both games 1-0 over the Cougars in the team’s first home games of the season. The Cobras (24-8) (4-0) shut out the Cougars (9-9) (2-2) thanks to stellar performances from starting pitchers Karley Yergler (11-6) and Ellie Vetter (7-1), who also drove in the game-winning run in game one. Parkland has now won seven straight games.
Up next, the Cobras host another conference doubleheader on Friday, March 31st, against Lincoln Land Community College. First pitch against the Loggers (6-13) (0-4) is scheduled for 2:00 PM on Friday, weather permitting.
Game 1: No. 4 Parkland College 1, Illinois Central College 0
The Cougars (9-9) outhit the Cobras in game one, but an Illinois Central error in the bottom of the 2nd inning put Parkland third basemen Bri Roloff on second base, and freshman Ellie Vetter (1-2, RBI) drove Roloff in on an RBI single to left field. That proved to be the winning run as Mahomet native Karley Yergler (7.0 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 11K) pitched a complete game shutout, and Parkland won 1-0.
Game 2: No. 4 Parkland 1, Illinois Central College 0
The Cobras threatened to score early in the second game, putting runners in scoring position in the 1st and 2nd innings, and Parkland finally broke through in the bottom of the 4th when outfielder Maddie Reed (1-3, RBI) hit a hard ground ball into left field, scoring pinch runner Addie Wallace. Both offenses quieted down the stretch as Ellie Vetter (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 8 K) shut down the Cougars, and the Cobras won 1-0.
