With a variety of clubs and organizations at Parkland, it can be hard for students to decide which ones to join. For eligible students though, Phi Theta Kappa, the official honors society of community colleges, offers unique opportunities for those involved.
Phi Theta Kappa, or PTK, is one of the few organizations where students are invited based on certain criteria, that being holding a 3.5 GPA and completing 12 credit hours. The reason for the elevated requirements includes the extensive opportunities provided to the members such as exclusive scholarships and conferences.
Additionally, there is a one-time membership fee of $100. While the fee may seem steep at first, PTK president Sara Steffen breaks the cost down. “About $60 goes back to PTK headquarters [which] funds scholarship opportunities, and [an] international conference that happens every year. $5 goes to the Illinois region to fund regional conferences, and then $35 comes back to the Parkland chapter.”
Every academic year, PTK members have the opportunity to travel on three separate trips for conferences. Two are held at the regional level, in various cities around Illinois. However, every April, an international conference is held, with this year’s being in Kansas City. Travel costs are partially covered by the membership fee.
In addition, PTK members earn the membership status on their Parkland transcript, a gold stole during graduation, and the opportunity to put the credential of the highly prestigious organization on resumes and job applications.
For those worried about PTK requiring a lot of time and dedication, Steffen notes that “participation is completely optional.” Once in the organization, the only requirement is to maintain a 3.25 GPA. PTK also offers many service events throughout the year for members wanting to get involved.
Any students interested in learning more about PTK are invited to join in on one of their weekly meetings on Wednesday 3-4 p.m in room L216. They also host informational meetings throughout the year, with details sent through Parkland emails.
