Mark your calendar for, Saturday, May 6. That is when Parkland’s annual music festival will take place. This local festival is put on by the students involved in Perimeter Road, with coordinator Deane Geiken, and faculty advisor Adam Porter.
No need to purchase tickets; the festival is a free show where you will have the opportunity to discover and support local bands.
This year, the music festival will feature six bands with music styles varying from Indie rock to pop funk to hip hop and more. “There is a little bit of everything for everyone,” said Porter.
Located in the B1 parking lot at Parkland College, the music festival will start at noon on May 6, with a performance by Perimeter Roads signed band, Poisoned Rationality.
Perimeter Road Sound Recordings is a record label at Parkland College.
“This record label, this co-curricular activity, allows [students] to apply [what they learn in other classes], in a real-world scenario,” said Porter, “So instead of doing a recording project for a class and a grade, they’re literally recording and mixing albums for real bands that are going to be out there on Spotify and Apple Music. And, they get real engineering credits for that, that they can put on their resume.”
When asked what role students will play in putting on the festival, Geiken said: “They will be doing stage set up, equipment load-out and set-up, helping the bands set-up, and they will also be doing a live audio mixing while the bands are performing. So it is 100 percent hands-on experience for all the students that are a part of the record label.”
Perimeter Road student Eli Brucker said: “My favorite part about the festival is getting hands-on experience. Getting credits and knowing that you did some of the tinkering [on a song] is a really satisfying feeling.”
Elizabeth Garner, drummer for Poisoned Rationality said, “My favorite part is getting to play. That is what I live for…. If I am not out there playing music, making people feel things, then I don’t want to do music.”
This family-friendly, live music festival features food trucks and games stationed about the B1 lot. The faculty of Perimeter Road also encourage everyone to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas, or anything else to keep comfortable throughout the festival.
For almost a year, Perimeter Road students have worked hard at planning this festival. They look forward to presenting the bands they chose for the event and are hoping for a big turnout of students and staff to support this event.
