Parkland is unique in different ways, from the community itself down to the individual talents each person contains. This tightly knit college can be proud of the achievements it has attained. One of these talents is the musical ability exhibited by each member of Perimeter Road Sound Records – a student-run record label. Under the guidance of their faculty advisors, Adam Porter and Deane Geiken, this group of young students is breaking the sound barrier with their music.
Luke Matias is responsible for moderating the social media accounts as well as marketing for the group. In an interview with him and the other musicians in attendance at their Friday afternoon meeting, Luke explained that everyone in the studio is equal. Anyone can join and if students are willing to put in the time on a weekly basis, they can maintain a position on the team. As it stands, “everyone is a student of Adam Porter,” said Matias. The student emphasizes the importance of real-world application in all the label’s work. This means that the productions are wide ranging, high-quality musical pieces. Their dedication of time towards music landed the label a live music festival at the Parkland Car show last May, and they don’t plan on stopping there. Their music features artists like LG the Real Kid, the Churros and the Dystopians.
Porter explained that the team is at an all-time high of student members. According to Porter, the label started in the basement of the D-Wing with just three students. Perimeter Road Sound Records has had a fruitful turnaround since the first few years of its existence at Parkland. Since then, the team has risen to a whopping 20 members, ten of which began this fall semester. All students are encouraged to join and continue to add layers of skill and diversity to their lineup. The cut off period for joining the record label depends on the developing project at the time. However, if any students are interested, they should feel free to get a hold of Porter or Geiken.
When asked about his job as Faculty Advisor of the label, Porter stressed that he wants, “to guide students on the right path through all of our projects.” His job is to ensure that students meet their deadlines, figure out the tasks at hand and simply being there for advice. He started this group with the intention of creating exposure for students to learn the art and have complete ownership of their work.
So far, the record label has developed a wide range of music. Holding to their standard of exploring new things, the record label has produced many compilation albums featuring all kinds of music. As Matias put it, the label is reliant on their “collective knowledge [that] everyone brings to the table.” This range of artists is the backbone of the group. Currently, the team is developing a song which should be done in a month or less, and community members should keep an eye out for new music throughout the semester.
