On March 23rd, Parkland College’s Fine and Applied Arts opened the Second Stage Theater for the debut of An Actors’ Studio Production: The Good Doctor directed by Michael O’Brien.
The audience quickly filed into the small venue and took their seats; a notable size crowd for opening night. Seating was arranged in a U-shape style centered around the versatile wooden set consisting of trunks, a stump, desks, and chairs, which allowed for an immersive viewing experience.
The show began with the introduction of the narrator, an aspiring writer who takes the audience on a visual journey of her drafts. Her characters and plotlines come to life through a series of dramatic and entertaining skits.

One tale focuses on an animated employee grappling with an unfortunate encounter with her superior, the Minister of Public Parks. Another features a sexton overcome with an intense toothache. Upon seeking medical attention, it is discovered that the “good doctor” is out. The inexperienced, but passionate apprentice decides to take a stab (quite literally) at the injury.
Though brimming with exceedingly humorous lines, an over-the-top slow-motion scene, and eye-widening physical stunts, emotive messages concerning topics of friendship and the importance of standing up for oneself are weaved into the performance.
Production Assistant Heather Ann Layman commented on the work of the cast and crew for this special performance:
The Actors’ Studio Series provides students an opportunity to experience the full scope of producing a show by participating in everything from acting to designing costumes, sounds, lights, props, scenic elements, and direction. Our faculty advisor and Assistant Technical Director mentor the students so that they feel confident in their creative choices and can work together to produce their show!
