Parkland College Theater has debuted its first show of the new year: Blithe Spirit, a sprightly, but dark comedy set in 1930s England.
The Harold and Jean Miner theater has been transformed into the Condomine residence; the scene is set with a grandfather clock, piano, a crisp leather couch, and a gramophone playing instrumental melodies. The traditional short bobs and updos of the time were in order, as well as the refined, sophisticated wardrobe composed of pearl necklaces, silk gowns, and sharp suits.
The audience follows writer Charles Condomine who is looking to find material for his latest mystery novel. Along with Ruth (his second wife), and their friends, the Bradmans, the main characters take the help of an eccentric medium to conduct a seance for inspiration. However, when Elvira, Charles’ first wife (now passed over) materializes, chaos ensues.
Charles finds himself hilariously juggling dialogue between his current wife and the spirit of his ex-wife, who is only visible to him. Accented with witty remarks, banter, mischief, and surprises, Blithe Spirit certainly captivated the crowd for the entirety of the show. If you frequent the theater or are simply looking for a night of entertainment, Blithe Spirit will not disappoint.
Featured below is a short Q&A with the director of the production, Abby Gailey:
What can the audience expect from this upcoming performance?
Audiences can expect a dark comedy, full of surprises and (hopefully) lots of laughs.
Can you describe the essence or spirit (pun intended) of the show?
Underneath the antics, seances, and countless martinis, I believe the spirit of the show centers on the lies that we tell each other and ourselves, and how they come back to haunt us (and in this case, quite literally).
What has it been like directing Blithe Spirit and working with the cast?
It has been a privilege to work with this cast and crew. Every single person on the stage is a seasoned veteran of the CU theater scene, and their creativity and insight made my job incredibly easy. Of course, every theater production is an enormous effort from all involved, so I’m exceedingly grateful for the time and energy that everyone has spent to bring this story to life.
Upcoming performances of Blithe Spirit will take place on Feb. 17, 18, 24, and 25 at 7:30 pm. 3 pm showtimes will be held on Feb. 19 and 26. Tickets run $20 for adults and $18 for students/youth/seniors/veterans. To purchase tickets visit University Tickets and for more details on the show visit Parkland Theatre’s website.
