In this upcoming election, we must enshrine workers’ rights in our state constitution. We can look no further than to politicians in our neighboring state of Wisconsin, who rolled back workers’ rights under the deceitful banner of “right-to-work” measures, to know how important this amendment is. In the US, a union can provide you with substantially better wages, benefits, and economic security. Without constitutional protections, as Wisconsin has shown, the right to organize can be seriously curtailed by corrupt politicians. Currently organizing a union has some protections under federal law. However, under the rule of our current extremist Supreme Court, no right is safe from repression as we have seen with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. We must protect Illinois from the wealthy and their paid-for-politicians who may benefit from turning us into a “right-to-work” country. We can do this by voting yes for Amendment 1 or the Workers’ Rights Amendment.
All over Champaign County, there is voting already underway. Luckily there is also grace period registration here which means any unregistered voter can register and vote at one of Champaign County’s vote centers between now and November 8th. Exercise your rights and do your part to defend against those who will take them from you.
