At Parkland College, democracy starts at a more personal level within the college’s Student Government. Student Government was created shortly after Parkland College was founded in 1966. Student Government is composed of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Student Trustee, and up to 10 senators.
Student Government duties and activities include attending a leadership conference every fall, being part of a college programming board where they represent and advocate for students, assisting clubs and organizations with ideas and proposals, and providing service to the community such as building homes for Habitat for Humanity.
Dr. Tom Caulfield, Director of Student Life, has been the Student Government Advisor for the past 16 years.
“This year we have a diverse group with an equal blend of successful second year students and strong newcomers,” Caulfield said.
Student Government hosts events such as Donuts and Dialogue, where they pass out donuts and cider from Curtis Orchard in attempts to get feedback from students on important issues. Although the appeal of Curtis Orchard donuts is strong they do not always hear from everyone.
Caulfield urged anyone with views or opinions about an issue to go to the Student Government office, located in room U117, underneath the “fishbowl” in Student Life.

Students can cast their votes in the Student Union between the bookstore and cafeteria on Monday, Sept. 15 from 10a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and 5 p.m.-7 p.m. and Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 10 a.m.-noon.
