CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The musical thriller Sweeney Todd, written by Stephen Sondheim and directed by Jeff Dare, comes to the Parkland Harold and Jean Miner Theatre April 6-23.
Based on the book by Hugh Wheeler, Sweeney Todd tells the story of a murderous barber seeking vengeance for his unjust imprisonment at the hands of Judge Turpin. Todd meets Mrs. Lovett, the clever owner of the meat pie shop below his old barber shop. Together, Todd and Mrs. Lovett scheme to murder their way through the people of London while they plot a way to reach the judge. Sondheim’s legendary musical thriller is the winner of 10 Tony awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book. Join us for this razor-sharp dark comedy thriller!
With music direction by Cheryl Morganson and choreography by Elisandra Rosario, Dare directs a cast that includes Matt Hester, Nicole Morgan, Jacob Deters, Tina Radi, Alex Murphy, Michael Steen, Bryan Goode, Caitlin Richardson, Sam Gegg, and a 19-member ensemble.
Performances take place in the Harold and Jean Miner Theatre April 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m. and April 16 and 23 at 3 p.m.
This show is rated Mature for graphic violence, adult language, mentions of suicide, and implied sexual assault. Special effects such as fog, haze, and loud startling noises will be used during the production.
Tickets are Adult, $25; Student/Youth/Senior/Veteran, $22; and Group (10 or more), $20. Opening night, April 6, is half the price of an adult ticket, $12.50.
