We’re almost there! Summer is quickly approaching. While we anxiously anticipate our long-awaited break, take a look at some of the ongoing Parkland-sponsored events that will keep us engaged in the meantime.
Student Government Elections
Now’s the time for your voice to be heard. Parkland College’s Student Government Election season is here. The Student Government Association (SGA) representatives hold the responsibility of advocating for the student body. Most importantly, representatives act on behalf of students in their work and collaboration with administrators. Voting will be held April 12-13. In-person voting will be located in the College Center and the Student Union respectively.
Parkland Theater Spring Closer
The Parkland Theater 2022-2023 season is officially drawing to an end with the production of the classic tale Sweeney Todd. The drama department has had a successful year, consistently delivering fun, compelling shows, and the finale is expected to continue that streak. The performance will be held in the Harold and Jean Miner Theatre and features an array of showtimes throughout the month beginning April 6. Tickets can be purchased through the theater’s online billing service.
Musical Ensembles
Parkland College will be hosting two musical concerts, both free and open to the public. Monday, April 17 at 7 p.m., the Parkland Jazz Ensemble will be performing in the Second Stage Theater. Sunday, April 30 at 3 p.m., a joint concert by the Parkland Orchestra, Wind, and Concert Band will be held in the Harold and Jean Miner Theatre. Visit Parkland’s music website for more on Parkland College’s various music programs.
Sexual Assault Resources
Parkland College will be observing Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) in April. A conversation surrounding awareness, education, and prevention of sexual assault will take place on Sexual Assault Awareness Day, Tuesday, April 18 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the College Center. A sexual assault resource fair is also set for Monday, April 24.
Be sure to check the Student Life calendar and your Parkland email for impending details.
Counseling Support Center Workshop
Parkland’s Counseling Services will be offering two workshops open to all students. This month’s sessions are entitled, “How Do You Find Your Meaning in Life?” and “Planning for the Future”. Both will be held on April 5 at 1 p.m. in Room U140. A remote attendance option via Microsoft Teams will also be available to those who are interested in the discussion. Pizza will be served to in-person participants. Check the Counseling Support Center website for more information on the upcoming workshop visit.
Planetarium Shows
Parkland College boasts one of the eight permanent planetariums in the state of Illinois: the William M. Staerkel Planetarium. The facility consistently provides students and the public with informative, entertaining presentations. Shows will be offered every Friday and Saturday for the month of April. Tickets are just $5 for students, seniors, and children under 12. For more information and details on showtimes, visit the planetarium’s website.
